Sink Cut-outs & Drainer Grooves: Worktop Planning Guide
Plan undermount, inset and flush-mounted sinks, tap holes and drainer grooves before stone worktop templating. Know what to include in your quote.
Upload my plan & quote →Choose the sink before the stone is cut
The sink model and installation type determine the opening and finishing required. An inset sink has a rim above the worktop. An undermount sits below it and exposes the stone edge around the opening. A flush-mounted sink needs a recess matched to the selected model. Confirm compatibility with both the sink supplier and fabricator before ordering.
What does an undermount cut-out include?
Ask whether your quotation includes the finished internal edge, the agreed sink reveal and the sink support arrangement. A sink fitted below the surface is a different specification from an opening hidden by an inset rim. Confirm who supplies and fits the sink, who provides its supports and who reconnects the plumbing.
Decide on drainer grooves at quotation stage
If you want grooves, specify the side of the sink, quantity and intended position. Ask the fabricator whether the detail is suitable for your chosen material and thickness and how drainage will be achieved. Grooves and a recessed draining area are different details: ask for the exact option to be shown on the quote and template drawing.
Porcelain needs a material-specific decision
Do not assume a detail offered in Quartz is available in every Porcelain surface. Machining can expose a different body colour beneath a printed surface. Ask to see a representative finished cut-out or groove detail for the selected product before approving it.
Tap holes and cabinet clearances
Send the exact tap, sink and accessory models, including any filtered-water tap or soap dispenser. Check bowl clearance within the cabinet and leave the fabricator to confirm hole positions, edge distances and supporting arrangements against the relevant manufacturer instructions.
Before you approve the template
Confirm the sink model, mounting type, cut-out position, reveal, tap holes and drainer details in writing. Have the sink and hob on site unless your fabricator has expressly agreed another arrangement. Later changes can require a revised template or replacement piece.
Check the selected product instructions
Your fabricator should use the current instructions for your exact product. Cosentino technical documentation includes separate Silestone and Dekton installation guidance.
