Kitchen Island Worktops: Size, Overhangs & Support

Plan a stone kitchen island with seating, slab sizes, overhang supports, cut-outs and access in mind. Compare the complete fabrication specification.

Start with the whole island footprint

Give your supplier the finished worktop length and width, cabinet footprint, seating side and intended edge detail. Include any end panels or waterfall legs. An island dimension measured only across the cabinets can omit a substantial part of the finished surface.

There is no single overhang rule for every stone

The permitted projection depends on the exact product, thickness, support arrangement and cut-outs. Manufacturer installation manuals distinguish between different layouts. Have your fabricator confirm the proposed design against the selected material instructions before approving it.

Plan seating and supports together

Agree the usable knee space and stool positions alongside the support design. Ask whether brackets, a frame, legs or another support arrangement are required, who supplies them and when they must be fitted. A visually thick mitred edge does not establish the structural capacity of the slab beneath it.

Can the island be made in one piece?

Check the usable dimensions of the actual slab, the edge allowance, vein direction, fabrication constraints and delivery access. A one-piece island cannot be promised from cabinet dimensions alone. If a join is needed, review its position and pattern relationship before manufacture.

Sinks and hobs change the design

A cut-out removes material and can change the support requirements around an overhang. Send appliance specifications and their intended positions with your plan. Ask the fabricator to confirm clearances and supports before the kitchen layout is finalised.

Compare the complete island quotation

Include the selected slab, thickness, finished dimensions, edges, cut-outs, supports, waterfall pieces, template and installation. Ask about access requirements and who prepares the support structure. Compare the same finished design across suppliers.

Check the selected product instructions

Your fabricator should use the current instructions for your exact product. Cosentino technical documentation includes separate Silestone and Dekton installation guidance.
