Choosing Marble & Granite Slabs for Kitchen Worktops

How to choose and reserve your exact Marble or Granite slabs, plan vein direction and confirm fabrication before committing.

Choose the actual slab, not just the name

For a natural-stone project, the name is a starting point. Ask to view the slabs proposed for your kitchen and record which ones you have selected. A small sample or a photograph of another project cannot show the whole pattern of your chosen slab.

Take your kitchen plan to the viewing

Bring the worktop dimensions, island layout and any splashbacks or waterfall ends. Explain where you want the strongest movement to appear. Your fabricator can then assess whether the selected slabs suit the pieces required and the intended visual result.

Check finish and thickness together

Confirm the finish and thickness of the specific stock being offered. View the surface in person where possible and discuss how the finished edges will look. Do not assume an online image represents the exact slab or finish available for your order.

Ask about natural features and treatments

Ask the supplier and fabricator to explain any visible features, filled areas or treatments in the selected slabs. The Natural Stone Institute notes that factory resin treatment may be used to fill small fissures and indentations in Granite. Review suitability for your project before approval.

Agree the layout before fabrication

Discuss vein direction, visible joins and how adjacent pieces will relate. Ask whether a layout drawing or marked slab photograph is available. Agree what can realistically be achieved; pattern continuity should not be assumed from a single slab photograph.

Confirm how the reservation works

Ask who places the reservation, which slab references it covers, how long it lasts and what payment or approval is required. Keep the selected references with your quote and approved specification. A supplier viewing and a fabricator order are separate steps to coordinate.
